William Howson TAYLOR

Dates: 1876-1935

The pottery at Smethwick near Birmingham functioned from 1898 till 1935 although its reputation was most noted in the pre-war period. It specialised in art pottery inspired by oriental ceramics of the Sung and Ming dynasties and developed unusual coloured glazes with mottled or flambé or lustre effects mainly on porcelain. Like many of his contemporaries the glaze recipes were a closely guarded secret and Howson Taylor burned all his notes before his death. Lit: Malcolm Haslam English Art Pottery 1865-1915, 1975.
