Bronwyn WILLIAMS ELLIS
Dates: b.1953
A graduate of Cardiff College of Art where she completed her BA and MA, she now runs a workshop in Bath. She is best known for her tile projects for both public and private commissions, but she also makes thrown ware and large scale objects. Her imagery often combines energetic figurative forms in large schemes using industrial biscuit-fired tiles. She decorates these with tin glaze, sponge prints and 'cuerda seca', which uses hot wax mixed with magnesium drawn on the tiles to produce bold and energetic outlines. She grew up in Ireland but was born in Portmerion and has strong Welsh connections and is a member of a practical and creative family who include, her grandfather, Clough Williams Ellis, the architect and creator of Portmeirion village and his daughter Susan Williams-Ellis who founded Portmeirion Pottery. |
