Scottie WILSON
Dates: 1888-1972
Was born in London but brought up in Glasgow. Family poverty meant that he left school at the age of nine to sell newspapers and later work as a market trader. After service in the Army on the Western Front during World War I he emigrated to Toronto, Canada where he had a second hand shop. Although largely illiterate, he started to draw and paint. Following some success in Canada, he returned to Britain in 1945 and exhibited at the Arcade Gallery. His work was admired by Jean Dubuffet and Pablo Picasso. In 1960s Wilson began to create paintings on plates and was commissioned by Royal Worcester to design a series of dinner ware which was produced until 1965. |
