	Andrew McGARVA (Scotland) Dates: b.1956 Born in Scotland he trained at Farnham College of Art. His work was influenced by the traditional slipware pottery of England, Wales and France, following a working visit to La Borne. In 1979 he set up his own workshop within Wobage Farm, Herefordshire, established by Michael and Sheila Casson. His work changed from wood fired salt glaze to stoneware and garden pots. Conscious of the economic necessities of making a living, he has adapted his work to meet market demands. Drawing on the early tin glaze decoration, he created individual decorated items with animals or birds or fruit. The four items in the collection are in this style and were purchased from the Ceramic Series Exhibition at Aberystwyth in 1985. In 1990 he moved to Burgundy in France where he makes domestic stoneware and earthenware as well as structural figurative pieces using both thrown sections and extruded tubes. Andrew McGarva is author of "Country Pottery, Traditional Earthenware of Britain", published by A&C Black (2000), which demonstrates his long held interest in the history of the potteries, the personalities and the contemporary interpretations and uses of these traditions.
