Among the Berber people of Kabylie in Algeria it is the women who are the potters. They make all kinds of bowls and plates but also produce animal models. The work is painted with mineral colours and fired in an open bonfire.

Hand modelled bird with black and cream painted decoration. The idea of a pottery bank probably first came from Europe and dates back many centuries. Its most famous form is the piggy bank.
