Animal Fantasies

Peteris Martinsons - Latvia

This artist is best known in Latvia as a ceramic sculptor working with stoneware and porcelain usually building abstract architectural forms with flat slabs of clay.

Peteris Martinsons - Water bird or duck13. Water bird or duck, 1995 (2.5" x 5.5")

Although small, the bird demonstrates the artist's way of working constructing form using flat slabs of clay. These have been impressed with stones or other objects to create relief patterns before they are built into the form. The piece was fired by the raku method which gives the metallic sheen. It was purchased when the artist was a demonstrator at the International Ceramics Festival at Aberystwyth in 1995.
