c1406 - Long standing form

Dave BINNS

Dates: b. 1959

Born in Chesire, he was initially interested in architecture, and studied 3D design at at Manchester Polytechnic. Prefering to handle materials, he initially rejected working with clay favouring the stability of wood. However, he learned how to throw, and developed an interest in traditional Japanese architecture, which influenced his work. He worked initially in raku, but in the 1990s developed a significant new body of work using varying configurations of mechanically inspired pierced platter and vessel forms. His current experimentation is with aggregates including clay, minerals and  glass which are press-moulded into plaster or wooden mouldsand finished by grinding and polishing. Binns has his studio in Denbigh, North Wales and teaches at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston.
