Ceramic artist and lecturer, Blackie was born in Huntingdonshire and trained at Farnham and Goldsmiths in London. He has been an influential tutor both at Farnham and Derby. He works largely by coiling or by cutting the clay with a wire, the process of making and firing being a fundamental part of the meaning of the work. In 1989 he was a demonstrator at the International Ceramics Festival where he constructed and fired a paper kiln. He has continued his interest in alternative kiln making and has traveled widely including to Norway, Japan and Australia to show and demonstrate his kilns.
