Clive BOWEN

Dates: b.1943

Born in Cardiff he studied painting and etching at Cardiff College of Art before taking up an apprenticeship with Michael Leach at Yelland Pottery in North Devon. In 1971 he established the Shebbear Pottery in Devon where he continues to live and work. His pots are all intended for use and he believes that they should be part of every day life. Using the local Fremington clay he throws much of his work and decorates it with different coloured slips and sgraffito. Most of his pots are raw glazed and fired in his large wood kiln. He does not sign his pots, identifying with the anonymous tradition of the country potter. Clive Bowen is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association.
