c988 - Flat Form with Three Leaning Arches

Graham BURR

Dates: 1929-2003

Born in Essex he initially studied at Chlemsford under Joanna Constantindis and then went to Camberwell. He rejected the strong influence of oriental philosophies in studio pottery and instead responded to contemporary ideas and styles. Although he worked largely in clay, throughout his life he remained undecided as to whether he was a ceramicist or a painter. He avoided the definition of sculptor and preferred to see himself as a painter who created his own specially shaped 'canvases in clay'.
