Michael CARDEW

Oval earthenware dish in red body covered in white slip with dark brown trailed slip decoration, of inner spiral square and outer curls with wavy pattern on rim. The whole covered in dark galena glaze. Such oval plates were made circular, then a piece was sliced out of the middle and the two halves stuck together to form the oval shape. They were usually made by his assistant Elijah Comfort.
