Michael CARDEW

Oval earthenware pie dish in dark red body with black slip over sgraffito decoration of curly zig zag pattern, the whole covered with galena glaze. These oval plates were made circular, then a piece was sliced out of the middle and the two halves stuck together to form the oval shape. They were usually made by his assistant Elijah Comfort.
