C1426 - 'Proud to be Shits'

Carole WINDHAM

Dates: b. 1949

She was born in Manchester and studied ceramics at Stoke on Trent College of Art in the 1970s followed by teacher training. She completed an MA at Royal College of Art in 2000. Initially she was a thrower but became more interested in modelling figures and making portraits. Her work has always been grounded in an interest in sixties pop culture but recently she has also found inspiration in Staffordshire flatbacks and portraits of the nineteenth century which she interprets with subversive humour. Her work frequently makes reference to well known figures in the art world such as the British artists, Gilbert and George, Stanley Spencer, Grayson Perry and Tracey Emin and more recenttly she has worked on figures of Sigmund Freud. She uses heavily grogged earth stone hand-building clay fired to a good whiteness at earthenware temperatures and a variety of techniques to make figures including carving hard slabs of clay and slip casting.  The underglaze colours are sometimes sprayed on and she also uses enamels and transfers.
