Born in Kelantan Malaysia in 1948 he travelled to London to study law. In 1962 following six months' work in a Danish pottery he took up pottery full time and completed his studies at the Royal College of Art. Working in both porcelain and stoneware, his pots are influenced by his Chinese heritage but with his own interpretation, particularly in his use of a wide range of glazes. His work gained recognition in the 1970s and he was the first living potter to have a show at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
