Charles HAIR (USA)

Dates: b.1955

Although he was born in the USA, he has lived and worked the Loire Valley in France for most of his life. After a 6 month period of training, in 1974 he established his own pottery workshop making reduction stoneware and porcelain. He has a passion for glazes and in 1985 was made Laureate of the French Foundation for his research on glaze technique. With the prize money he traveled with his wife to Mashiko in Japan where he spent 6 months working with the potters close to Shoji Hamada and the Mingei movement. He learned new techniques as well as absorbing the Japanese philosophy of ceramics which he applied to his own work. He was a demonstrator at the International Ceramics Festival at Aberystwyth in 1989.
