Danis PUNDURS (Latvia)

Dates: b. 1965

Latvian artist who trained in ceramics at the Latvian Academy of Arts (Master of Arts, 1998) where he works as a lecturer. He won recognition with his one man shows 'Bone China' in 1995 and 'XXL' in 1996 and the piece in the collection relates to this body of work. At the 1999 International Ceramics Festival he demonstrated large scale throwing creating a monumental form 12 feet high which can be seen on the CDRom 'Big Pots'. Pundurs declared his giant textured pot "an ice cream dedicated to the festival". Since 1995 he has made sand sculptures on Latvian beaches. These conical mounds are large in scale as well as number, an ultimate departure from his early delicate bone china vessels.
