David ROBERTS

Dates: b.1947

Born in Sheffield and studied Art and Education at Bretton Hall College but is largely self taught in ceramics. Initially he taught art full time, but in 1981 he ceased teaching to concentrate on making his own work in stoneware but more particularly in Raku. From 1985 to 1988 he was Chair of the Craft Potters Association. All his work is coil built using simple forms with an emphasis on interior space. The pieces are large and his techique gives an unique crackle and dense blackened body. In 2000 he published "Painting with Smoke" (ISBN 1858251435) which discusses his work, his interest in post war abstract painting and the Yorkshire landscape
