Deirdre DAW (USA)

Dates: b.1958

Born in Kansas City, USA, she attended California College Of Arts and Crafts where she won scholarships, completing an MFA in 1992. She previously studied art in Cleveland and Canada. This piece was purchased in 1994 and was part of a touring exhibition "The American Way" organised by Aberystwyth Arts Centre for the 1993 International Potters Festival. At that time her work included narrative pieces that referred to commemorative printed china of the 18th/19th centuries inscribed with political irony. Her current work is sculptural incorporating twisting natural forms based on roots, twigs and nests to create strange hybrid plant/vessels.

"I love working with clay and glazes. The firing process transforms them completely and dramatically, surprising me with ever-new possibilities. I find myself using challenging, labor-intensive processes that force me to focus, teach me to deal with frustration, and provide a kind of meditation"
