Jill FANSHAWE-KATO

Dates: b. 1943

Born in Nottingham she trained in painting at Chelsea Art School. She later travelled to Japan where she lived for six years and first studied ceramics. She is married to a Japanese photojournalist and is based in London. Her ceramics are inspired by her travels in South America and Asia, especially Japan, by the natural world including the dazzling forms and colours of coral reefs and the rainforest. She makes functional stoneware pots as well as sculptural pieces by coiling, slab building or modeling and decorates the work with brightly coloured designs of tropical birds, exotic fish, animals and flora.
