George SEMPAGALA (Uganda)
Dates: b. circa 1940
Born in Uganda he studied and worked with Michael Cardew at his pottery in Abuja, Nigeria in early 1960 where he became an accomplished craftsman potter. He was invited by the Maugabo Self Help Centre to establish a pottery project at Maugabo in Uganda to enable the younger generation to learn a craft and make a living. He continues with this work and making his own pots, using local raw materials and wood firing. He has been invited on two occasions by New Zealand Society of Potters to work with them at Driving Creek Potteries, where he has demonstrated his skills as a master potter on the kick wheel as well as introducing new methods of surface decoration. Sales of his work at an exhibition in New Zealand generated funds to support the work in Uganda. |
