European GERMAN

Dates:

Glazed earthenware pottery was made in Germany from as early as 900 and by the 16th century, as in other parts of Europe, slip decorated wares were popular. By the 17th century coloured tin-glazed wares were also being produced. However Germany is especially noted for the development of saltglaze stoneware which was made in a number of centres after the 15th century and widely used for household pottery and drinking vessels. Porcelain was first made at Meissen near Dresden (founded 1710) where they pioneered the development of this new refined white ceramic body which was expensive and difficult to produce. At first the formula was a highly guarded secret but, by the end of the 18th century, there were 23 factories in Germany making decorated porcelain and figurines catering for an arsitocratic and luxury market.
