Jane HAMLYN

Dates: b.1940

Born in Whitechapel, London, she initially studied part time before joining the Studio Pottery Course at Harrow School of Art, under Michael Casson
(1972-1974) after which she set up her own workshop. Whilst rich in both colour and texture the utilitarian aspect of her work is never far from sight. She once said; 'Function is like the string on a kite, it connects the high-flying idea to the holding hands. Let go the string and you lose the kite!' Her work celebrates the distinctive orange-peel effect of saltglaze, exploring its mottled surface over strong and uniquely shaped pots, jars and dishes often inspired from metal ware. She is a former chair of the Craft Potters Association (CPA) and also writes and lectures on ceramics.
