Jo-Anna DUNCALF (Wales)
Dates: 1965-
Jo Anna Duncalf was born in Old Colwyn, Wales and originally made raku vessels suggesting ancient amphoras; more recently, she has made androgynous figurative ceramics. She trained at Bangor Technical College where she undertook an Arts Foundation Course, followed by a BA in Ceramics at South Glamorgan Faculty of Art and Design, Cardiff (1985-1988). Following graduation, she began travelling and attended the International Workshop of Ceramic Art in Tokaname, Japan with the help of a British Art Council travel grant and a Welsh Arts Council Grant (1988). Subsequently she was employed by Tobo Sugie Ceramic Factory in Tokaname for a short-term period and worked under ceramic artist Masamichi Yoshikawa. She had two solo shows in Japan before she left to continue her travels (1989). She was artist in residence at Whitecliffe Art School, Auckland, New Zealand and worked in Australia during 1990-91. She gained a PGCE in Art and Design from the Institute of Education, London (1992) and went on to do artist residencies in England and Wales.
Jo-Anna Duncalf's work in the past consisted of thrown and assembled raku-fired amphora forms inspired by Egyptian precedents. Her current work has developed more figuratively and now explores the theme of androgyny. She handbuilds, using slips for colouring and nepheline syenite glazes for the figurative work. She attended the MA in Ceramics course at the Cardiff Institute of Higher Education (1996). Her work has been included in group and solo exhibitions in Britain and abroad. She has taken many residencies, in York, England and New Zealand |
