c1189 - 'The Chase'

Joanna MALLIN-DAVIES

Dates: b.1965

A graduate in ceramics from Cardiff 1986-1989, Joanna Mallin-Davies creates figurative ceramics and is particularily concerned with the female nude and the image of the horse. Initially she worked in stoneware, emulating bronze patena with her glazes. Since the late 1990s she has worked predominantly in cast bronze. Her horses have been inspired by the prehistoric cave paintings of Lascaux, as well as modern race horses. While living in Hong Kong (1991-1993), she became motivated by the simplicity of ancient Chinese and Japanese artifacts, as well as Buddhism and Taoism.

She writes "The woman and the horse remain a perfect vehicle for me to communicate the different facets of humanity, our relation to the world, emotions and ourselves. Femaleness (what I believe it means to be a woman), spirituality, consciousness, sensuality and inner strength continue to fascinate me, giving me ever growing and changing insights. In that respect, I have always avoided laboured titles, preferring people to see my work un-hindered by my personal philosophy".
