Julian STAIRDates: b.1955On graduating from Camberwell College of Arts and the Royal College of Art, he initially made sculptural forms in clay before changing to his precisely thrown and turned tableware. In his more recent work he uses stoneware as well as white porcelain and black basalt often combining pieces in one assemblage. He is also noted for large scale 'funerary' vessels over 4 meters high. As a ceramicist he has developed a more conceptual approach linking function with ritual and historical references. In the 1990s he wrote a PhD on critical writings on ceramics in the 20th century. |
