	Kanjiro KAWAI (Japan) Dates: 1890-1966 While studying at Tokyo's Technical Institute in Japan he met Shoji Hamada and Bernard Leach and became fascinated by pottery especially in the early years in experimentation with glazes. Inspired by the slipware that Hamada brought from Britain in the 1920s his work took on a new direction. With Hamada and Yanagi he became one of the leading figures of the Japanese folk craft movement Mingei believing in the spiritual potential of fine craftsmanship and in the need to maintain traditional values and culture and develop from them.
