c1597 - Mable's Early Rise

Katie SCARLETT HOWARD

Dates: B. 1978

She studied Fine Art at John Moore's University in Liverpool, and completed an MA in Ceramics at Cardiff (UWIC) in 2003, she now lives in North Wales. Her work celebrates the female form and in the early series she created voluptuous nude female figures influenced by ancient fertility figurines such as the Venus of Willendorf as well as recent artists whose work depicts women including Jenny Saville, Paula Rego, and Beryl Cook. She wants to question stereotypes of the perfect female body.  More recently she has made clothed figures in strong dynamic poses. Some of these take inspiration from memories and photographs of her mother and grandmother and celebrate everyday domestic activity. All her work uses a slab construction which is individually modelled to give each figure character and individuality. She uses oxides and stains to achieve earthy colours on her figures, but more recently has experimented with bright colours in a matt finish with velvet underglaze for clothes and details.
