Mark PHARIS (USA)Dates: b. 1947Studied at the University of Minnesota, USA under Warren MacKenzie and is now Professor of Ceramics at Minnesota. Using handbuilding techniques, Pharis uses prepared paper patterns to cut out the parts of his pot from a rolled clay slab. The pieces are joined to make each different teapot, jug or jar, with the 'seams' still evident. Each piece is intended to be used as well as looked at. His glazes are bright yellows and oranges. The teapot in the collection was purchased from the exhibition of American ceramics at the International Ceramics Festival in 1993. |
