European MEDIEVAL

Dates:

Pottery objects became large and more sophisticated in the 12th and 13th centuries. Its use was limited as most people ate off wooden platters and drank from horn or leather containers. It was largely used for food preparation, storage and serving of drinks and storage of herbs and medical preparations. Makers were of low status. The bold forms and thumb impressed handles of jugs and watering cans (used for sprinkling water before sweeping the floor) have been much admired by studio potters since the early years of the movement in the twentieth century.
