Mollie WINTERBURN (USA)Dates: 1920-1996In the 1950s, determined to become a potter, Winterburn dug her own clay and fired her pots in a bonfire with the help of the children at the school where she was teaching P.E. She eventually became a teacher and lecturer in ceramics and wrote two books, Handbuilt Pottery (1967) and Techniques in Handbuilding (1969). In 1979 she moved to mid-Wales where she had her own workshop. She was a long standing member of the Craft Potters Association. She worked in handbuilt stoneware shaping the vessels into organic, asymmetrical forms decorated with simple designs emphasising the structure. |
