Sensational Ceramics
Ardmore Ceramic Art Studio, South Africa
Ardmore studio was set up in 1980s to encourage untrained black women to become skilled in the art of making pottery. There are now more than forty artists including a number of men. The colour and detail of the designs draw on an African heritage combined with myths and stories from many sources.
Like most of the Ardmore pottery this piece is made by two artists, Layeki who made the pot and Zinhle who decorated it. The extravagant decoration appeals to the eye while the modelled details such as the flowers or the fish on the flamboyant handles create a unique touch experience.
Modelled by Layeki, painted by Zinhle
Earthenware with coloured glazes, 2000 20 cm high
