The pottery started in 1892 with the production of richly decorated tiles. Ably managed by William Burton the firm also developed a range of 'hollow wares', jugs, bowls and vases. By the first decade of the 20th century it established a notable reputation for its spectacular lustre glazes and elegant art nouveau designs. These wares won many awards and were widely marketed, including Tiffany's in New York. winning many awards at international exhibitions. In 1913 the factory was granted the Royal Warrant. After 1928 they developed new more 'modern' glazes in pale colours with a matte finish such as 'Lapisware'. Most of the fine collection of Lancastrian in the Aberystwyth collection is from this period. Pottery production ceased in 1938, but the firm continued as a tile manufacturer. |
