Born in Tokyo, Hirakawa finished his studies at the Ceramics School of Aichi Prefecture in 1968. By the early 1980's he had developed his range of celadon glazed porcelain tableware, but his interest in different clays was growing and he travelled throughout Japan, researching them. He concentrates on making simple and vigorous works with natural materials
