Trupti PATEL (India)

Dates: b. 1957

Born in Nairobi and moved to Baraoda in India in 1962. She obtained an MA in Fine Arts at the University of Baroda before, under a British Council Scholarship, completing an MA in Ceramic Sculpture at the Royal College of Art, London. She continued to live and work in the UK and in 1995 was invited to demonstrate at the International Ceramics Festival in Aberystwyth, where the figure in the collection was purchased. In 1997 Trupti Patel returned to Vadodara in India. Her early work focused on an interest in the human form, particularly with relation to female issues and she made several figures in clay, plaster and terracotta, decorated with slips of manganese and iron with highlights of white slip and stains.Her work has also included large facetted colums, including one commissioned by Grays Thurrock Council in Essex in 1995. Her more recent work follows from three years at the Ceramic Centre in Vadodara. The work is in stoneware, fired in a wood kiln and vessel in form. She has exhibited widely in India and Europe and her work is in several collections, including the V&A London.
