Udai Lal KUHMAR (India)

Dates: 1949-2007

Born in Rajasthan, India where he belonged to the tradition of terracotta Icon makers of Molela who specialise in reliefs depicting Gods and Goddesses of the Hindu faith. Fifteen generations of his family have worked in this tradition. Two clays are used, mixed with donkey dung to prevent cracking. The pieces are fired and then coated with a white and then decorated using earth colours. After painting the icons are finished with Zila for shine and metallic paper strips.
